At first glance, the Altec Lansing Octiv Duo looks like many other of the dual iPod docks on the market. It’s sleek and black, with its 181x327x133mm triangular design fitting neatly into tight spaces and corners. It’s capable of charging up to two iPods or iPhones simultaneously while pumping out the music stored on either through its speakers.
At 1.1kg, the £79 Altec Lansing Octiv Duo iPod dock is lightweight. With two 2in speakers, however, you can really crank up the music. We loved the Altec Lansing Octiv Duo's bundled remote, which lets you navigate your iPod or iPhone's menu. A magnet surface lets you stick it to the rear of the iPod dock when not in use.
The Altec Lansing Octiv Duo's auxiliary port means other MP3 players or CD players can be connected to the iPod dock and their content played through the speaker. A USB port on the side lets other devices, such as mobile phones and digital cameras, be hooked up for charging.
The Altec Lansing Octiv Duo comes into its own when used with an iPhone or iPod touch with the Music Mix and Alarm apps installed. Both apps are available from the App Store for free. Hook up such a device without this software installed and the iPod dock will remind you it's available.
Music Mix uses a slider control on the player's screen to let you adjust how many tracks are selected from either device when two are connected to the Altec Lansing Octiv Duo simultaneously. It also allows you to swap between the two devices and check their battery level, while still displaying the album art.
Alarm Rock turns the iPod dock into an alarm clock. It displays the time on its screen, which you can customise with different themes and colours. You can also schedule a time for the Altec Lansing Octiv Duo to wake you up, choosing between a sound supplied and the tracks on your audio player.
The Altec Lansing Octiv Duo is a reasonably priced iPhone/iPod dock and speaker. Its dedicated apps make it ideal for iPhone and iPod touch owners.
