Google's Android operating system (OS) has been storming global smartphone sales in recent years, leaving Apple's iOS lagging behind.

In fact, 81.7 percent of smartphones sold in Q4 of 2016 were Android, with 17.7 percent going to iOS and the rest being fought over by Windows, BlackBerry, and other OS. (See the Gartner report here).
