Sometimes a new product comes along that will redefine your relationship to technology, open up a whole new field of innovation, and give bragging rights to the few mavericks lucky enough to have one. Something like the iPhone needs a special blend of style, charisma and utility to charm the tech-buying public. Those are special, joyful moments.

These companies decided not to bother with all that, and instead go for the 'ugly and pointless' market. Who needs popularity and genre-defining status when you can have your friends and colleagues laughing in derision?
