A who’s who in the European technology industry gathered in London last night for the pretigious Digital Masters Awards.
The awards - presented by BBC Newsnight's Emily Maitlis and attended by Techworld - were set up last year to shine a spotlight on Europe’s top leadership talent in the digital industries, with prizes going to people working in everything from finance and HR to product development and business intelligence.
Among this year's winners were talented individuals from several UK-headquartered companies, including music streaming service Shazam and fast growing fintech firms TransferWise and Funding Circle.
Other big names to pick up the coveted green cube trophies included employees fashion tech startup Farfetch, while Uber, Citymapper and FanDuel all missed out.
Swedish heavyweights Klarna and Spotify also had individuals on the winners list, as did Berlin's SoundCloud.
Two new awards, for Excellence in Digital Transformation and Multichannel Retail were won by Mike Bracken of the UK’s Government Digital Service and Mark Lewis from retailer John Lewis, in recognition of their achievements in driving the digital agenda within their respective organisations.
Awards were given out at the illustrious Freemason’s Hall in Covent Garden to CEOs, founders and business leaders excelling in their field.
The winners of the twelve categories (shown below in full) were determined by a judging panel, including leading investors Robin Klein, Sonali De Rycker, Daniel Waterhouse and Henrik Persson.
“The array of brilliant executives leading European companies to global success is testament to the strength of Europe’s digital ecosystem,” said Clare Johnston and Robert Swerling, co-CEOs of The Up Group, which organised the awards. “The winners embody the qualities that have underpinned this success: bold leadership, innovative thinking and the courage to take risks.”
The Up Group said the event brought together around 800 of Europe’s most senior digital executives, board members and investors.
It's anticipated that many of the companies entering the Digital Masters Awards will also feature in Techworld's own awards, The Techies, which are due to be held later in the year at a 5* hotel in Central London.
