McAfee has updated its firewall to improve protection from mobile devices.
McAfee Desktop Firewall 8.5 allows sysadmins to control access for travelling and remote workers through a new Connection Aware Policies feature. It checks a user's connection against certain criteria, such as IP address, before allowing connection to the companynetwork. The policy rules can be varied and changed for individual clients.
Desktop Firewall 8.5 is aimed at both small and large companies and also monitors internal traffic to block internal threats. Network quarantining and client lock-down are also possible where a system has been infected.
Sysadmins often complain infections are caused by mobile workers, McAfee said. When workers take their laptops and other devices home or on the road the viruses they catch on insecure home or wireless networks can spread companywide when they reconnect to the enterprise system.
McAfee isn't alone in updating its products to the threat. A number of anti-virus vendors have been releasing products to guard against infections from mobile clients.
