Cisco is to acquire video surveillance company SyPixx Networks for US$51 million in cash and options.

SyPixx offers software and hardware that allows analogue video surveillance systems to operate as part of an IP network, Cisco said. The acquisition will allow Cisco customers to integrate their existing video surveillance systems into an overall physical security structure, Cisco said.

SyPixx sells analog to digital video camera encoders, digital to analogue video monitor decoders, analog video transmission equipment, video recording and management software and servers.

The acquisition is expected to close in Cisco's third quarter. The SyPixx products will become part of Cisco's Emerging Markets Technology Group.
