VCE, the converged infrastructure consortium of Cisco and EMC, this week unveiled new and enhanced data center IT systems, including an all-flash memory platform for mixed workloads.
VCE is a leading vendor of integrated compute, storage, switching and virtualization infrastructure, a market it says, citing data from IDC, is growing 43% per year to $11.2 billion by 2017 from $3.6 billion in 2013. Other converged infrastructure offerings include the FlexPod reference architecture from Cisco and NetApp, "hyper-converged" systems from VMware, SimpliVity and Nutanix, and those from IBM, HP, Hitachi, Dell and Oracle.
The new and enhanced VCE Vblock systems include:
- Vblock System 740, which now includes 3X storage performance, 50% lower TCO and easier provisioning based on service level objectives. This system combines Cisco Unified Computing, Nexus ACI-ready networking, and EMC VMAX 3 storage.
- The new Vblock System 540, an all-flash-based converged infrastructure system for consolidating mixed workloads such as private clouds, databases and business applications. The Vblock System 540 includes EMC's XtremIO all-flash arrays, Cisco Unified Computing and Nexus ACI-ready networking. It provides copy services for applications like SAP with many instances across multiple application landscapes, VCE says.
- The new Vblock System 240 is a converged infrastructure system for midsized businesses and distributed remote offices. It is based on EMC's entry-level VNX5200 unified block and file storage system.
New software for Vblock system include VCE Integrated Solutions for Cloud Management. These are pre-integrated, tested and validated programs designed to simplify deployment and management of cloud computing.
The VCE Integrated Solution for Cloud Management with Cisco provides software for IaaS and Vblock virtual resource provisioning based on Cisco UCS Director. The VCE Integrated Solution for Cloud Management with VMware provides the VMware vRealize Suite management platform.
VCE also rolled out what it calls technology extensions for EMC storage and Cisco UCS compute platforms. These are designed to enable additional capabilities and scalability for new and existing Vblock systems.
The VCE technology extension for EMC Isilon storage integrates this storage platform with a Vblock system to consolidate and manage enterprise data and applications. Vblock systems can now be expanded to incorporate large-scale user data for virtual desktop infrastructure, enterprise data lakes for Big Data and Hadoop data analytics, and scale-out NAS, VCE says.
The VCE technology extension for EMC Isilon storage also supports Hadoop Distributed File System.
The VCE technology extension for Cisco UCS compute supports specialized graphics processing such as seismic modeling, digital media transcoding, and compliance with HIPAA privacy and security regulations.
VCE Vblock Systems 740, 540 and 240 are orderable today. Vblock Integrated Solutions for Cloud Management with Cisco and VMware, and VCE technology extensions for EMC Isilon storage Cisco UCS Computing will be orderable within 90 days.
