BT increased its turnover in the last three months of 2005, thanks to a growth in broadband and networked IT services. However, the company also saw a continued decline in its traditional voice business, with revenues falling by three percent.
Profit after tax for the quarter, which was the third in BT's fiscal year, came in at £411 million down from £658 million a year earlier.
Revenue was £4.9 billion, up 8 percent from a year ago, including the gains from BT's acquisitions of Albacom SpA and Infonet Services Corp. Without the acquisitions revenue would have grown only 3 percent, the company said.
One third of BT's revenue came from what it calls "new wave" services, including networked IT, broadband and mobile services. That sector grew 42 percent from last year, to £1.6 billion.
Within the new wave area, broadband revenue increased 48 percent to £374 million, driven by increased consumer demand. Networked IT services grew 42 percent to £1 billion, and mobility revenue by 22 percent to £67 million.
Consumer revenue decreased 5 percent overall, however, as did revenue from small and medium-sided businesses, BT said.
The company had 6.9 million wholesale broadband connections in the quarter, an increase of 2.8 million compared to the previous year, BT said.
