Arkeia has announced a cheaper backup product, Server Backup for Linux, for Linux servers with a single tape drive. It is specifically designed for businesses and enterprise departments which rely on local backups; that means branch offices and departments of large organisations and small/medium enterprises.

"We specially tailored this compact version of Arkeia for users who have less complex backup needs," said Phil Roussel, CEO, Arkeia. Arkeia says the product also has an easy-to-use Java interface.

There is an integrated Wizard for easy set up of basic operations. It's basically a re-packaged version of Arkeia's network backup product.

Server Backup can also backup databases via plug-in extensions for 'databases' such as Lotus, Oracle, DB2 and MySQL. The MySQL plug-in performs either incremental, differential or full MySQL backup while data is online and accessible. Databases and table backup are selected via a GUI navigator. Backup can be defined up to the table level and the plug-in is compatible with all table formats handled by MySQL.

The Arkeia MySQL plug-in is compatible with versions of MySQL starting from 3.21 and including versions 4.x.

A Linux Disaster Recovery module can be added to provide more security. With it, an automated disaster recovery process restores a crashed Linux machine from scratch if the server is stolen or totally destroyed.
