University Technical College (UTC) Reading, a new school that has been set up to help address the lack of skilled IT and engineering professionals in the UK, announced a deal today that will see Fujitsu provide 30 Celsius Workstations and 120 Q510 PCs to classrooms throughout the college.
With a specialism in computer science and engineering, UTC Reading, one of 17 UTCs in the UK, has a requirement for an ICT infrastructure above and beyond the levels of most schools and colleges.
The college, which is home to 142 students aged 14-19, offers students professional and vocational BTEC qualifications in IT and engineering, alongside A-levels in product design, computer science, physics and maths.
It is using Fujitsu's Celsius workstations as part of its engineering design course because they're powerful enough to help students undertake real-world, complex design projects, such as online car design.
“Pupils are using Autodesk's 2D/3D CAD software which requires good processing speeds and graphics cards,” UTC Reading principal Joanne Harper, told Techworld at the BETT education conference in London today.
"The technology that Audi and BMW use is being used in the classroom to do engineering design," added Fujitsu head of product marketing in the UK & Ireland, Craig Parker.
Meanwhile, the college said it selected Fujitsu’s Q510 micro PC because it doesn't take up much space and fits well with the college’s modern environment.
"It’s one of our best sellers in the education market because it’s zero watt, zero noise, and takes up little space," said Parker.
The UTC has industry partnerships with Microsoft, Cisco, Network Rail and Peter Brett Associates. These partners help dictate what children are taught at the college, offer employer accreditations and also invite some students into their organisations for work experience.
“The youngsters are learning skills that they can transfer straight into the workplace,” claimed Harper.
UTC Reading’s partnership with Fujitsu was facilitated through solutions provider, European Electronique.
