One of the most technologically advanced hotels in London started taking bookings today through a new mobile app that can also be used to interact with rooms after the guest arrives. 

The Premier Inn’s first “Hub” hotel in Covent Garden, set to open in November, comes with a range of in-room devices that can be controlled through the mobile app.

The app, built by Premier Inn hotel owner Whitbread Hotels, can also be used to book the room prior to arrival.

Using augmented reality technology in the app, guests can "bring a map on the wall of their room to life" by holding a smartphone or tablet in front of it to display local hotspots. Guests can then interact with a map of recommended restaurants, bars and attractions. 

The app can be used to change the channel on 40-inch smart TVs or adjust the room temperature and lights.

"Apps are already revolutionising the way we order our groceries, book taxis, and check in at airports, it was only a matter of time before the hotel experience followed suit," said Simon Ewins, business development director for Whitbread Hotels & Restaurants.

"With hub by Premier Inn, we believe we’ve created a first-class technology-enhanced hotel experience, without compromising price, style or comfort."

Whitbread, which also owns Costa Coffee and Beefeater, said there is free high speed internet throughout the hotel, which is something that the CTO of the GLH Hotel group said is very important to hotel guests today.

A further 10 "Hub by Premier Inn" hotels plan to open their doors over the next three years in London and Edinburgh.
