Samsung Securities expects Apple to launch a smaller iPad in the third quarter of 2012, according to an internal document.
The leaked document (PDF), discovered by the OLED Display blog, shows that the company anticipates that Apple will launch an 'iPad mini', adding weight to recent rumours that Apple is already testing prototype devices with a 7.85in screen.
"Following the success of its iPad1 and iPad2, which have together achieved sales of 55m units, Apple plans in Q1 2012 to launch the iPad 3 and in Q3 2012 a new 7-inch product temporarily referred to as the iPad mini," the document reads.
Samsung produces AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diodes) displays for its own tablets and smartphones and it was rumoured that Apple CEO Tim Cook had met with the company to discuss production of displays for the iPad 3, though the document reveals that Samsung's Mobile Display division can only produce 54 million AMOLED panels a year, short of the number Apple requires.
The document also reveals that Apple is interested in flexible AMOLED displays for future versions of the iPad beyond the third-generation model.
