Content aggregator Feedly has introduced a premium subscription option for its RSS service in a bid to cash in on the absence of Google Reader.

Feedly compiles feeds from a variety of online sources for users to customise and share with others.

The paid-for version, called Feedly Pro, comes with several news features, including: the ability for users to search within their Feedly feeds through Article Search; https browsing for extra security; one-click save to any Evernote book; and premium support so users get fast-tracked to the front of the help queue.

The company said that a series of new updates are also in the pipeline.

"We will be introducing new pro features regularly. The next batch of features will be decided on by Feedly Pro users themselves, as you will get to vote on what features you would like Feedly to develop next," said the online company.

Feedly Pro will be available for $5 (£3.20) per month or $45 (£29) per year when it is introduced this autumn but for now there is a $99 (£64) lifetime subscription that will give the first 5,000 subscribers access from today.

Feedly has tripled its user numbers from 4 million to more than 12 million following the news that Google intended to close its RSS feed service, which terminated on 1st July.

Initially, Feedly struggled to handle the influx of people signing up to its service, with the company’s mobile apps displaying messages saying the service was “over capacity” and revealing that the firm was adding servers as quickly as it could.

Previously a mobile-only service with iOS and Android applications, Feedly introduced a cloud-based platform and Web version in June.

Other news aggregators aiming to clean up in the aftermath of the Google announcement include Digg, AOL, Netvibes and The Old Reader.
