BMC has bought ITM Software, which makes applications for managing the business-related aspects of IT operations.
ITM's Business Suite product consists of a number of modules that focus on topics such as financial resource management, vendor relationship management and staffing.
One observer said ITM's technology should fill a gap in BMC's lineup.
"This is all stuff that for the most part BMC doesn't have, or if they do have it, it's not that strong," said Mary Johnston Turner, senior analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group. "It's a solid addition to their portfolio."
BMC is battling for market share in the IT operations and business service management space along with "Big Four" rivals IBM, CA and Hewlett-Packard.
The ITM deal is one of its latest strategic moves. Earlier this year, BMC moved to buy BladeLogic, a data centre automation vendor, for US$800 million.
