Argos has appointed Matt Hobbs to the newly-created role of head of digital engineering, reporting to the retailer's chief digital officer, Bertrand Bodson.

In the role, Hobbs will work across the digital and IT teams at Argos, based at the company's Innovation Hub in Victoria, London. He will support the expansion of digital delivery channels, scaling of teams, process and platforms, as the retailer transforms itself into a digital retail leader.

Hobbs joins from Nuance Communications, an American software company, where he was responsible for delivering a global, multi-channel digital technology platform.

Prior to that, the held senior technical roles, including head of architecture and engineering at online home furnishing and decoration portal, and online travel agency Travelocity Europe, and head of technical operations for

Home Retail Group's chief digital officer Bertrand Bodson said: "[Hobbs'] expertise will be key to help us connect the agile front end environment with back end infrastructure and maximise APIs, to deliver meaningful technical solutions that benefit our customers."

According to his LinkedIn profile, Hobbs started his role at Argos in April.

Argos is transforming its traditional catalogue business to become a digital retailer.

Its technology investments include growing the amount of customer data to give shoppers a more personalised experience by encouraging them to register an account, and opening up a growing number of digital concept stores that allow the retailer to test out new technologies such as dynamic voice-picking systems.
