Sun has announced a big supercomputing win for the Texas Advanced Computing Centre (TACC). It will be for a 420 teraflop system that will have 1.7 petabytes of Thumper, aka Sun Fire X4500, server/storage systems included. What a great win for Sun. How ironic that a high-performance computing application should be the reason for this rather than video serving or business intelligence, the two markets Thumper has been identified with.
There will also be a Sun StorageTek tape library, possibly an SL8500, and StorageTek drive arrays as well. A TACC spokesperson said: "This Sun system will enable scientific codes to achieve greater performance on vastly larger problems, with higher resolution and accuracy, than ever before. It will be one of the most important scientific instruments in the world."
Congratulations to Sun.
