HP has a new Virtual Connect technology for blade servers.

The idea is that instead of having individual Fibre Channel HBAs for every blade in blade server connected to a Fibre Channel SAN the HBAs are connected to the entire pool of blade servers thus making it much easier to add or remove blades from the server. It means that the FC HBAs are connected to the blade server chassis and the HBAs connect to individual blade via a virtual connection scheme. It needs special HBAs and both Emulex and QLogic have announced these.

It's similar to HBAs connected to a single physical server which runs multiple virtual servers and Emulex supports that idea already. In both cases HBA bandwidth is shared between individual blade or virtual servers.
