Arriving in Cannes on the second afternoon of Networkers - it's tech city here this week, with 3000 networking professionals in town - I tried to register and get into the venue (the town's Palais des Festivals) only to be told I couldn't. Yes, I was expected, but journalists weren't allowed in until tomorrow.

I explained that all I wanted to do was use a workroom and an Internet connection, but to no avail. Apparently the workroom hadn't even been set up yet.

So what was I supposed to do with my afternoon? You don't really want to go sunbathing in January, not even on the Cote d'Azur, and anyway, I had work to finish and stories to file.

Thankfully, all was not lost - the conference Wi-Fi network was open and was spilling out onto the pavement outside. The downside was that the Palais got in the way of what sunshine there was, and it's surprisingly cold here in the shade.
