  • Not IPv6-ready? It's time to start planning

According to the Internet Society, thousands of companies and millions of websites are now permanently deploying IPv6. So it's safe to say the Internet is officially no longer a homogeneous IPv4-only Internet - it is a dual-protocol IPv4-IPv6 Internet. While the proportion of IPv6 Internet traffic is relatively small today, the composition of today's Internet is already shifting.

  • Adopt IPv6 soon or be sorry later, says Internet Society's Leslie Daigle

A dozen of the world's largest internet companies - including Facebook, Google and Comcast - have committed to June 6, 2012, as the start date for their production deployments of IPv6, an upgrade to the internet's main communications protocol.

  • Wide adoption of IPv6 stalled until 2012, claim analysts

This was the year that IPv6 garnered major headlines, but 2012 is expected to be the year when the next generation Internet protocol gets widely deployed by US carriers and enterprises.

  • Will the sky fall if you don't deploy IPv6?

Will the world end if you don't deploy IPv6? Will the internet grind to a screeching halt? Will your computer systems disintegrate into a pile of bits and bytes? In short, no. At least not yet. But you may want to consider a few things.

  • 2012 should be the year of IPv6

Is 2012 the year to invest in IPv6?

  • What happens if IPv6 fails?

During the past six months, the Internet engineering community has undertaken an unprecedented effort to promote IPv6 as an urgent and necessary upgrade for network and website operators to allow for the continued, rapid growth of the Internet.

  • Why we shouldn't worry about switching to IPv6 yet

A lot of coverage of IPv6 over the past few years gives the impression that you need to switch to IPv6 soon. That's not necessarily the case, though, especially for a consumer or a small business.

  • IPv6 has a long way to go

There's maybe never been a better time to be a network engineer, that is provided you have IPv6 experience.

  • Four top iOS tools for professional IT admins

Gibbs has more IT tools for the iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone.

  • Upgrade your business network with Windows 7 pro features

Though Microsoft doesn't make a big deal of Windows 7's many networking improvements and new features, they offer a fine reason to upgrade from XP. There used to be many reasons to skip migrating to Windows 7; but as the operating system matures and XP ages, Windows 7 is becoming a worthwhile update.

The fundamentals of IPv6

IPv6 is needed to sustain the growth of the internet. IPv4 could in theory be continued to be used and you may be able to work around the address space security limitations of that protocol, but eventually, the cost of staying with IPv4 will outweigh the benefits.
