  • The promise of software defined networking

If you aren't intimately familiar with software defined networking, don't fret. Only 10% of 450 IT practitioners at a recent Network World event raised their hands when asked if they understand SDN. But if the emerging technology lives up to its promise to redefine networking as we know it, there is no time like the present to dig in and learn more.

  • Dell networking chief: taking on Cisco in the data centre

It is just over a year since Dell completed its acquisition of Force10 Networks, but the company already has big plans to challenge Cisco's dominance in the data centre.

  • High-speed Ethernet planning guide

Standards-based 40- and 100-gigabit Ethernet switches and routers are starting to show up in enterprise networks, following ratification of the IEEE 802.3ba specification in mid-2010.

  • How HP can win in the data centre

HP and Cisco are currently embroiled in a war of words, market share and revenue in Ethernet switching overall, but can HP really put up much of a fight in the data centre?

  • How Fibre Channel over Ethernet went from fee to free

With demand for FCoE more sluggish than vendors had hoped, 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch and adapter makers are making it available for free.

  • Cisco and HP gear up for battle in data centre

Cisco's foray into the server market has been talked about for some months now. What has not been so widely discussed is HP's attack on Cisco's territory with a new range of ProCurve switches - it all adds up to a tasty battle.

  • 10G Ethernet: can copper cut the mustard?

10GBase-T and other specs for 10G Ethernet over copper cabling are coming, but could this be the generation where fibre connectivity remains dominant?

  • Blade servers vs. rack servers

In the world of datacentre computing, there's a lot of contention over whether deploying rackable servers is better than deploying blade servers to host consolidated or virtualised applications.

  • 10 Gig evolves into fabrics

New technologies could make LAN/SAN convergence a practicality.

  • When and why you should roll out 10Gbit Ethernet

Ten gig Ethernet may well change storage networking comprehensively - when it becomes commoditised

IP SAN Solutions: Where Do They Fit?

An IP SAN is a storage area network based on IP networking infrastructure using the iSCSI (Internet SCSI) storage protocol. This is directly analogous to a Fibre Channel SAN, which is based on FC networking infrastructure and uses the FCP (Fibre Channel SCSI) protocol. IP SAN solutions, therefore, consist of iSCSI initiators (software driver or adapter) in the servers connected to iSCSI storage systems by means of standard Gigabit Ethernet switches and cables.
