  • How can IT shops reduce server virtualisation's impact on storage?

Virtualising x86 infrastructure isn't just a one-step process - as servers change, the whole data centre must change as well. While server hypervisors such as VMware's ESX, Microsoft's Hyper-V and Xen can make IT more efficient and cost-effective, many of the virtualisation advantages can be cancelled out when data centres rely on technology and processes that haven't been updated for the virtualisation age.

  • IBM buys Blade to boost data centre and cloud

IBM announced that it is purchasing Ethernet switch maker Blade Networks. The move is the latest in IBM's 2010 buying frenzy, and continues the consolidation of the tech industry - pitting IBM, Cisco, HP, and Dell head to head in a variety of markets.

  • VMworld 2010: Virtualisation, The Matrix, and the VMware/Microsoft rivalry

VMware's VMworld has quickly become one of the most important business technology conferences of the year. Held at San Francisco's Moscone Center Monday through Thursday of this week, the conference had its share of highlights and interesting facts. Here are 10 things seen and heard at VMworld:

  • What the Dell/HP 3Par buyout really means

The bidding war for 3Par ramped up this week when HP raised its offer to $30 per share, a $3 increase over Dell's bid, bringing the bidding to $2 billion. Dell had launched the opening salvo in mid-August when it had offered just over $1 billion to buy 3Par. As of this writing, 3Par had deemed HP's bid "superior" and Dell was mulling over its response.

  • 3Par is not the only cloud storage game in town

Two weeks ago most of the world had never heard of 3PAR. Now, it has been the centre of tech headlines and doubled in value thanks to a bidding frenzy between Dell and HP. HP appears to have the edge right now, but the good news for whichever tech giant ultimately loses the battle for 3PAR is that there are other virtualised storage providers out there.

  • Utility storage: Ready for a long haul?

The distance between storage virtualisation and a utility-storage utopia is vast and full of what seem to be insurmountable challenges, as early adopters have discovered.

  • DataCore's CEO communicates

DataCore believes that packaging storage applications and intelligence as virtual machines is the way forward. The file-based storage and block-based storage division needs ending.

  • Green Grid delivers - for members only

Is the Green Grid in danger of letting the wider datacentre community down by focusing on its members' self-interests?

  • Some Storage Expo notes

The UK's Storage Expo was a trifle smaller we this year - the show less visited? - but the quality of the visitors was uniformly said to be high. Here are notes on six vendors there.

  • HDS thin provisioning limitations

An EMC blogger points out HDS thin provisioning limitations - but HDS does much more here than EMC does.

Thin provisioning

Balancing new project demands and limited IT resources is the challenging, often thankless, job of IT management. IT managers must constantly evaluate the efficiency of tools and processes used to serve and manage corporate data. Of the many proposals to improve efficiency, few are actually implemented. Of those, fewer still achieve demonstrable success.
