The 22in LG Flatron L226WTQ flat-panel monitor has a 2ms response rate and 5,000:1 contrast ratiio that produce beautifully smooth images.
Analysing product trends is often one of the time-consuming aspects of writing reviews. Fortunately, when it comes to flat-panel monitors such as the LG Flatron L226WTQ, each fad and fixation tends to be that bit more prominent than is the case with other products.
Not so long ago we had the ‘response rate’ issue. After several years of giving us screens with response rates so slow that the typical game or fast moving image scrawled long blurred trails across the screen – and keeping quiet about it – manufacturers finally realised that this was an issue that needed to be hyped up. Alas, this decision was made just as we got to the point where response rates were typically so fast that it was now barely an issue. (The LG Flatron L226WTQ, for instance, has a 2ms response rate that produced beautifully smooth gameplay in our tests.)
This year’s overriding flat-panel trend has been contrast ratio. An indicator of colour depth, the higher the contrast ratio the blacker the blacks and the whiter the whites. But after several years of relatively modest contrast ratios, the situation has exploded of late.
First we had 1,000:1 contrast ratios. Then, companies such as LG and Samsung pushed that figure to 3,000:1. Now in the LG Flatron L226WTQ we have the first screen with a 5,000:1 contrast ratio.
And does the LG Flatron L226WTQ produce the goods? Well, yes, just as long as you have the movie mode switched on – as with the 3,000:1 contrast ratios, the 5,000:1 figure is achievable only when Digital Fine Contrast is enabled.
So, when you’re playing games and watching movies, you can take in the full vibrancy of the LG Flatron L226WTQ's screen.
On the other hand, should you be using the LG Flatron L226WTQ for something more serious and sober (typing out this review, for instance), you’ll find you can drop the colour and the brightness and go for something a little easier on the eyes.
