It means the virtual end of data loss on Windows and Linux systems. No agent software is needed on the protected systems. As data on the systems is changed in real time it is copied across a network link to a remote vault from which it can be restored if needed.
Normally televaulting means that data is periodically backed up across a network to a remote vault. If the protected system crashes then any data entered since the preceding back-up session is lost. Asigra's CDP prevents that happening.
To call the CDP functionality "agentless" is technically correct but Asigra televaulting users do have client software already installed in protected systems. CDP is deployed as an integrated feature of the DS-Client component of the Asigra Televaulting software which is installed at the remote sites.
When CDP is enabled, the DS-Client monitors the specified data source and whenever changes are detected, data is automatically backed up offsite. The DS-Client maintains Asigra’s agentless architecture even when CDP is being performed, Agentless CDP is enabled for Windows and Unix file systems, and for Microsoft Exchange using the Televaulting Message Level Restore functionality.
Customers do not pay additional licence fees for the CDP functionality; they pay only for the amount of data stored in the remote repository. VP in charge, Eran Farajun, said: "We see CDP as an integral part of the backup solution not a separate add-on product to be purchased, installed and managed.”
Only changed data is sent over the network and it is compressed and de-duplicated, with network optimisation techniques used to further reduce bandwidth needs. Transmitted data is also encrypted. Adding CDP to televaulting particularly suits remote offices where there is a combination of critical data and no local backup facility. It also provides a disaster recovery capability for both these and larger offices.
