Employment in telecoms is falling and professionals in the field receive less training than other IT professional counterparts, according to E-skills UK.

The IT sector skills council said there is a "gradual decline" in the number of people employed in telecoms professional roles, and those in such occupations are receiving "proportionally less training" than other IT professionals.

What's more, the rate of job-related training amongst employed telecom professionals has fallen below the UK average for the first time in five years, the training specialist claimed in its latest Telecoms Bulletin.

E-skills UK has compiled its report based on IT Insights surveys involving 150 telecoms professionals. Telecommunication firms have a higher incident of skills gaps for ICT professionals, said E-skills UK.

But the demand for contractors has risen, with advertising up 5 percent over the previous period, while there is a reduced demand for permanent staff, with advertised roles down 2 percent.

The average advertised salaries for certain roles – including network/communications analyst/engineers, communications managers and senior network communications analysts/engineers – has fallen since last quarter.

However the overall trend for those in the telecoms industry was an increase in earnings. Contract rates have also risen to almost £1,200 per week for certain contract jobs, such as network support engineers.

Graduates are still the main source of new entrants to the sector, but a relevant degree is not a pre-requisite for entry. Less than a quarter of telecommunication firms will only consider applicants with IT degrees.

E-skills UK Telecoms Bulletin is a bi-annual publication, providing a summary of all the latest Telecoms data collected from Government and private sources.
