3Com has launched the IntelliJack, a managed version of its original Network Jack, a Fast Ethernet extension box that converts a single port into four ports.

The IntelliJack family consists of the NJ205 IntelliJack, a managed four-port Fast Ethernet switch for the EU and other markets that supports EU and UK wall outlet standards, and the NJ105 IntelliJack, an unmanaged four-port switch.

The NJ205 is a managed switch that mounts in the wall, expanding a one-port LAN wall outlet into four Fast Ethernet network connection points. It supports centralised management, location-mapping and power-forwarding, port-level VLANs and traffic prioritisation, which, said 3Com, makes the NJ205 switch suited for supporting VoIP and other converged applications.

“Organisations today are looking for cost-effective and flexible ways of expanding their network while maintaining exceptional performance for security and converged applications,” said Neal Kaufman, the IntelliJack product line director at 3Com.

“With the new 3Com IntelliJack switches, network managers can increase their Fast Ethernet connectivity without the cost and disruption of further expensive cabling. The 3Com IntelliJack switches are the answer to connecting an increasing number of users to the network with a limited budget.”

IntelliJack switches are positioned inside a standard wall cut-out, in raceways or in a floor box. According to 3Com, their unique form-factor makes them easy to mount in most locations and, as no extra cabling is required, the IntelliJack switches are suited to hard-to-wire older buildings, solid wall structures, and sites with asbestos insulation.

Both the IntelliJack NJ105 and NJ205 switches support different power options to meet a variety of installation needs, including industry-standard Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af PoE) and local AC power, all using existing Category 5/5e cabling .

The IntelliJack NJ205 is priced at £151 or £2804 for a pack of 20. The IntelliJack NJ105 is priced at £88 and £1593 for a pack of 20.
