NTT DoCoMo and several major Japanese cellphone and chip makers are planning to develop a single-chip system that takes care of core mobile phone features such as operating system, middleware and drivers

As a result prospective handset makers will be able to take the platform and build various bells-and-whistles features such as a camera or music player on top of it and be spared the worry of developing the core of the phone.

The aim of the project is to accelerate the global adoption of WCDMA services and the development is expected to be complete sometime between July and September 2007. Such all-in-one platforms are often developed by companies backing technologies to make it easier for product makers to come up with new goods.

The joint work to be undertaken by the five partners (includingRenesas Technology, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Sharp) will build on a single-chip LSI developed in 2004 by NTT DoCoMo and Renesas. That chip combined a baseband processor and a Renesas SH-Mobile application processor.

The new chip will include support for the WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) 3G phone standard and HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) data technology with second generation GSM, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution), they said.
