Go wireless for WAN backup
Dedicated wireless broadband could provide the backup Internet connection to keep your company running after a cable break, said service provider CI (Community Internet) as it launched RedKite, which offers data rates of up to 20Mbit/s using WiMax-ready technology.
CI said that the service provides a wireless equivalent of symmetric DSL (SDSL), so the upload and download rates are the same, and is business-class, with 24 hour monitoring and 99.9 percent availability.
RedKite costs £1500 to install plus a monthly fee that depends on the data rate, ranging from £95 for a 1Mbit/s connection contended 10:1, to £2,995 for an uncontended 20Mbit/s link. The drawback is that so far, the service is only available in Oxford and central London.
Powered Gigabit Ethernet is made redundant
Foundry Networks claimed that its FastIron Edge X424 switch is the first to offer 24 ports of PoE (power-over-Ethernet) Gigabit Ethernet plus optional redundant power supplies. Priced from $6695 (£3790), the device can be upgraded with one or two 10Gig ports for use as trunks. There is also an all-fibre (but non-PoE, obviously) X424 model, with 24 Gigabit SFP ports, at $10,995 (£6230).
Also new from Foundry are release 2.4 of the FastIron family's IronWare operating system, which adds granular bandwidth management and improved multicast routing via Passive Multicast Route Insertion (PMRI), and 24-port SFP modules for the FastIron SuperX modular switch and the BigIron RX series chassis switch.
Modules meet changing needs
Flexibility and high port density are the main advantages claimed by Allied Telesyn for its AT-9924TS modular Layer 3+ switch. The $8645 (£4900) device provides 24 UTP Gigabit Ethernet ports, plus two 20Gbit/s expansion bays for 10Gig modules or 12 UTP or fibre Gigabit ports, and also features dual redundant power supplies, in 1U of rack space.
The company added that the AT-9924TS supports both IP v6 and jumbo frames, so can be used for iSCSI-based IP SANs. It has a broad QoS feature set, such as support for TOS and DSCP, queue shaping and mechanisms to meter applications and services, and its Layer 3 routing capabilities include RIP, OSPF, IGMP and DVMRP. The device also supports VRRP, for synchronising the routing tables of multiple devices, and BGP .
