EMC has warned users of its hosted MozyPro backup and recovery service that massive price increases are imminent. From March, its monthly fees are set to as much as triple.
EMC gained the storage services last year with its purchase of Berkeley Data Systems. Just last month, EMC unveiled MozyEnterprise, which incorporates technology from three Mozy services along with pieces of EMC offerings such as RSA security tools.
The company said it has contacted all MozyPro users to announce plans to change from a single licensing model for all systems to separate schemes for desktop and server computers.
EMC said the current model is not sustainable, and all new customers after 1 March will be charged under the new pricing scheme.
Typical monthly fee increases range from $8.95 (£4.50) to $24.45 (£12.35) for a single-server licence and 10GB of storage to from $329 (£166) to $1,014 (£512) for 20 servers and 500GB.
EMC said it will "grandfather" existing holders of MozyPro licences to the current price list. These customers have 30 days to buy additional storage capacity at today's prices.
