IT suppliers are going to be put on the spot at a special event organised by the green charity Global Action Plan .
The event, Answer Time for Green IT, has been called by Global Action Plan’s Environmental IT Leadership Team (EILT), a group of IT directors and experts who focus on exploring and publishing best practice sustainable Information Communication Technology (ICT) strategies.
The Environmental IT Leadership Team and an invited audience will quiz a group of vendors about the green messages coming out of the industry.
The EILT now concerned that many IT suppliers are using the new green agenda simply to sell more products.
“This rush to sell 'green' products and services confuses the issues. Often there are vast efficiency savings to be made by optimising existing systems and significant impacts associated with installing new ones; especially if it means buying new hardware,” said Global Action Plan.
Organised around a Question Time format, participants will be able to pitch questions to a senior panel of hardware and software vendors and government representatives. The event will be chaired by Gartner analyst Rakesh Kumar.
This is the board’s second initiative following the ground-breaking Inefficient Truth report produced last year in conjunction with ComputerWorld UK .
The report revealed how much carbon is being released from IT systems (3 percent of total global emissions) and that 86 percent of ICT departments do not know the carbon footprint of their activities and fewer than 20 percent even see their energy bills.
Among the questions being put to the panel are:
- Is software development forcing companies to buy more equipment increasing their carbon foot-print and energy costs?
- Is it better and cheaper to ‘sweat computer assets’ rather than buy new more energy efficient kit?
- Where are the big payback areas for action?
- What do responsible procurement policies look like?
- How does IT play a part in the wider organisation strategy for emission reduction?
