HP has today announced the release of its “Next Generation Information Platform”, which combines IDOL information processing technology from British software firm Autonomy with a high-performance real-time analytics engine from Vertica (another HP-owned company).
The new product, which will become part of HP's Information Optimization portfolio, helps businesses make sense of so-called “human information”, found in video, audio, email, texts and social media. This unstructured data accounts for more than 85 percent of the world’s data, and provides richer meaning because it consists of ideas and concepts, according to HP.
Autonomy's IDOL (Intelligent Data Operating Layer) server can index unstructured data within an enterprise, providing users with a search-based interface. Meanwhile, the Vertica Analytics Platform is a data warehouse software for storing and analysing structured data, or data that has been stored in a relational database.
Ken O’Hagan, chief technology officer of HP Software for the UK and Ireland, said the Next Generation Information Platform allows organisations to analyse unstructured, semistructured and structured information in a consistent, uniform way, enabling them to adapt, change and manage risk. The product uses algorithms to process data in real-time from a multitude of different sources.
“HP Information Optimization is a core component of HP's Instant-On Enterprise,” said O'Hagan. “This will allow organisations to explore new ways of running their businesses and build more flexible systems.”
The release was supported by research from HP, revealing that more than 50 percent of information within an organisation remains unconnected, undiscovered and unused. Moreover, only 2 percent of surveyed executives said their organisations can always deliver the right information at the right time to support the right business outcomes.
By incorporating the 'Big Data' capabilities of Vertica's analytics platform with Autonomy's ability to process unstructured data, the platform offers a number of interesting use cases.
For example, organisations can collect sentiment analysis and combine it with social graphing to map how different groups respond to change. Alternatively, unstructured data from video cameras in retail outlets can be combined with sensor data to establish buying patterns.
Autonomy's Chief Marketing Officer Nicole Eagen told Techworld that the technology could also be used for predictive analytics to help with decision making. By combining internal data with data from external sources, such as social networks, organisations can make predictions about future trends.
HP is also announcing a range of products to support its Information Optimization portfolio, including the newest version of its deduplication appliance, the HP B6200 StoreOnce Backup System, which can deduplicate data at 28TB per hour, and its IT Performance Suite, which enables IT management to improve performance with operational intelligence.
