Argos has launched a 'digital hub' in London in a bid to attract more developers to its business.

The high street retailer, which employs over 30,000 staff across the UK, has opened new offices located next to Victoria station as it seeks to recruit "new talent" into the business.

Roles currently being recruited include developers digital designers, product managers and testers. The company said that it will form four or five project teams at the office, but did not reveal how many staff it will be recruiting.

A spokesperson told ComputerworldUK that the staff will work on projects designed to "improve the front end of our customer experience across mcommerce/apps or ecommerce, orwork on exciting challenges across multiple channels with a strong focus on innovation."

The new office will support flexible working, and will seek to tap into the start-up scene in London's East End.

Argos has attempted to move towards a multi-channel sales approach in recent years, as part of a strategy which has seen bricks and mortar stores closed. Meanwhile it has invested in supporting mobile and online sales, partnering with O2 to provide in-store wifi access at 735 stores, and rolling out an augmented reality app, Blippar.

"We want to unleash the entrepreneurial spirit I know to be at the heart of our business and which has meant that nearly 50 percent of our business now originates in a digital channel," said Argos digital director, Bertrand Bodson.

"We want to build on the successes we have already seen with digital initiatives such as Blippar and Digital Christmas Gift Guide and take that further. Building our agile capability is a strong boost to Argos' transformation plans, allowing us to bring digital solutions to the market faster and in a more timely and relevant way."

In its recent financial results the retailer highlighted that online sales made up 46 percent of the £1.8 billion total revenues during the last quarter. Meanwhile sales made through mobile devices accounted for a 20 percent of the total, growing 75 percent year on year.

The company announced today that it is to roll out 88,000 Near-Field Communication (NFC) points across its stores.
