The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has released further details of its Mobile Infrastructure Project (MIP), which aims to extend mobile coverage to 60,000 homes and businesses in rural parts of the UK.
An online tender reveals that the government is setting up a single supplier framework to improve mobile coverage in ‘not-spot areas’ of the UK, with plans to deploy networks between 2013 and 2015.
It is intended that the project will deliver mobile coverage to areas where market-driven, private investment doesn’t make sense for mobile operators.
The chosen supplier will be responsible for delivering a range of telecommunications infrastructure solutions, which will be deployed in line with the requirements of the mobile operators.
It is estimated that the contract could be worth up to £200 million.
Details of MIP were released in Chancellor George Osborne’s latest budget, which stated that the plans were being implemented to make the UK the technology hub of Europe in a bid to “support technological innovation and help the digital, creative and other high technology industries”.
Areas that will benefit from the improved coverage also include 10 key roads, two of which are in Northern Ireland, one in Scotland, one in Wales, with the rest in England.
Suppliers interested in bidding for the contract have until the end of May to submit their requests to participate.
