Educated at Bancroft's School and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology where he obtained a degree in Electrical Engineering.
Following a period with London Transport he joined IBM as a Systems Engineer. He retired from IBM in 1997 after 31 years service, where he held several senior management appointments including Director of Business Plans, General Manager Software and Services and General Manager, Government Industry for IBM Europe, Middle East and Africa. He was appointed to the board of IBM UK Holdings in 1987.
He is currently a non-executive director of REX Software and a Trustee of Ability.Net. He is a Warden of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists and holds several other public appointments.
He joined the Society in 1974 and become a fellow in 1990. He was appointed Vice President of External Relations in October 1999 and appointed Deputy President 2003/04. Other previous roles in the BCS include chairing the Web Initiative Steering Group and being a member of the Branding and International Policy Working Parties and a member of the ECDL Board. He is currently Chairman of the Property Review Steering Group, a member of the Products and Services Board and a member of the International Standing Committee.
He is also a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
