Most people don't realise how much the "last mile" can cost to install. A Cisco rep told me of a Norwegian customer - a service provider selling triple-play (voice, video and data) broadband - which offers a 50 percent discount if you dig your own trench from the road and drill your own hole through the wall.

Norwegians are by and large a practical lot, and it's not too hard imagining them borrowing a digger and doing the job themselves. It would be rather more scary if BT or ntl:Telewest tried to making the same offer in the UK - I can envisage some serious structural damage taking place.
