I recently terminated the contract on a BT ISDN2 line that I no longer use. In this week's post was a little mailshot card thingy from BT; emblazoned across the front is the phrase: "Goodbye not farewell".

Am I missing the point? I thought it was meant to be the other way around. So if you're seeing off someone whom you hope you'll see again, you'd say: "Farewell, but not goodbye".

So unless my memory of common phrases is playing tricks, BT is trying to tell me: "You think you might come back to us one day, but we're determined that you won't".
