Techworld is the result of two forces coming together. Publishing giant IDG was looking to launch a website for the UK enterprise computing market, little knowing that three former work colleagues - David Cartwright, Maxwell Cooter and John Dunn - were looking for a publishing partner for their idea of an online magazine for UK's techie community.
Once the two parties had come together, things took off quickly and Techworld was launched in May 2003. The site is based around a series of knowledge centres, of which storage and security were the first. Mobility and Wireless was introduced in September, followed by Operating Systems and Servers, Networking and Applications.
Techworld's rapid success in establishing itself as the website of choice for the technical community was officially recognised with its award as new business launch of the year from the UK Association of Online Publishers.
The Editors
The site is run by and both of whom have a good deal of experience of networking technology and magazines.
Maxwell trained as a programmer but quickly found IT journalism more interesting and has worked on a variety of publications and websites. He was editor-in-chief of the UK's first networking weekly, Network Week, and has launched two websites for the telecoms community.
John entered IT journalism as technical editor of Personal Computer Magazine, before progressing to become editor of Network World (formerly LAN Magazine), Network Week and Tornado-Insider magazine. He has since freelanced for a number of technical publications in the technology, science and business fields.
Max and John have been joined by Radhika Praveen as assistant editor. Radhika moved to the UK from India where she spent six years with IT publications like Express Computer, CHIP magazine (proud memories of which she still hasn¹t grown out of), ITSpace.com and ZDNet India.com. She has also recorded her experiences of coming to the UK on her own blog.
Another new addition is Tom Jowitt, who in a previous life was once a technical author for a company selling a legacy operating system (anyone remember Pick?). From there Tom moved to Bloor Research working as a technical editor on Bloor's "Evaluation and Comparison" reports. He then joined ComputerWire, where he wrote for the daily news service Computergram, as well as Computer Business Review (CBR) magazine.
